Biography

Jake designs extensively both in the UK and Worldwide. His work has been seen with major opera companies and festivals inc Welsh National Opera, New Zealand Opera, Garsington Opera and St. Galler Festspiele.

Internationally, he’s worked throughout Europe, North America, and Asia in a variety of venues from traditional proscenium arch theatres to unique site specific spaces.

Selected credits include: Andrea Chenier for St. Galler Festspiele, Switzerland; Don Giovanni for Kilden Opera, Norway. The Magic Flute and Don Pasquale for Welsh National Opera; Blue Beards Castle for Theatre of Sound (Winner of  the Royal Philharmonic Society Award) London, Atlanta, Toronto and a multi city tour of New Zealand; Amadigi and Le Comte Ory for Garsington Opera; Peter Pan, The Dark Side (World Premiere) for Haydn Fondazione, Italy; Vixen for Silent Opera in association with ENO, (London, Helsinki, Trento, Hong Kong and Beijing). Sounds and Sorcery – Celebrating Disney’s Fantasia, for The Vaults; Purcells’s King Arthur and The Fairy Queen for the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican Centre; Die Zauberflöte  and Le nozze di Figaro for Turku Opera at Åbo Svenska Teater, Finland;

Jake has lit numerous productions for Opera Holland Park Including most recently the critically acclaimed World Premiere of Jonathan Doves Itch as well as Margot La Rouge and Le Ville and as co productions with Charles Court Opera, The pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. His designs have been seen on multiple seasons for both Buxton International Opera Festival (La sonnambula, Land Of Might Have Been, Il re Pastore, La Donna Del Lago)  and Longborough Festival Opera (La Traviata, The cunning Little Vixen, Spell Book and La liberazione di Ruggiero). 

He has lit productions for nearly all the UK’s major music conservatoires including multiple productions for The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Royal College of Music, Trinity Laban, The Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and over 25 productions for Royal Academy Opera. 

As an Associate lighting designer Jake lit the US premiere of Peter Maxwell Davis and David Pountney’s  “Kommilitonen!” at the Lincoln Centre New York.  Jake has also lit for theatre, independent films and Perrier Award winning comedy productions.

In 2009 he was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (HonARAM) and in 2023 his production of Bluebeards Castle was nominated for a Canadian Dora Mavor Moore Award for outstanding lighting design.
